The Flesh

It should be noted that I do not know how to properly blog. "Edit Html"? Sure. I mean yes please. I don't fucking know. Jeez Ramon, could you give a girl a lesson?

Anyway what I wanted to post was some mp3s and my brief comments on the new album by The Flesh: This album is really super pretty. And neat. And nice. Also good. You don't like my adjectives? I told you I'm new at this. What do you want from me? I think this band is wiggly, moody, sometimes creepy, and mostly danceable. Jamon will probably hate the shit out of it. Then he'll say, "Have you heard the Fleshettes EP by Xiu Xiu" and we'll all groan. I am sorry I keep cussing. I think it's because I just spent 8 hours in the free clinic at the Bethesda Mission-also known as God's house-where if you swear, no matter where you are in the whole g'danged building, somebody randomly appears and tells you that Jesus is mad at you. But The FLESH! The Flesh are kind of good. I am an admitted Chryssie Hynde freak, and the comparison is obvious. And I think the girl is vaguely trying to be like Karen O. But it's also strangely melancholic and a little dark, and has held my interest for the last few days, so I thought I would post. You know, on the blog. Because I'm a blogger.

Xiu Xiu - Live in Seattle

Quicktime video of Xiu Xiu playing 'Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl' and covering 'Ceremony' live at Neumos in Seattle, WA

The songs drape themselves across their subjects in deformed electro tapestries. They play out like symphonies, but feel compressed into the internal microcosm of an American bedroom... bedroom symphonies, bedroom confessions over chimes and gonging bells and industrial beats and buttery guitar leads that slide through the songs like a straight razor opening up skin. - Kill Rock Stars

How to stop the next epidemic

check out this great WIRED magazine article on the research of a UCLA biologist, Nathan Wolfe, who is investigating methods to determine unknown viruses in humans before they can start spreading. excerpt:

We do know that it takes three steps for a zoonotic agent to become an HIV or a smallpox. First, a human must be exposed to the virus. Then, the virus must either be virulent or become so through mutation. Finally the virus must be able to move from human to human and not kill its host so quickly that it doesn't have time to spread. Each of these steps is a complex biological process, and each presents opportunities to ward off a pandemic. Traditionally, however, the study of infectious disease has focused on containing and tracing outbreaks — say, Ebola in Africa, or HIV around the globe — after a zoonosis has started spreading. (Occasionally, as with avian flu, scientists have identified a potentially dangerous virus one stage before human-to-human transmission.) When it comes to searching for new or unknown viruses among wild animals — and discovering the process through which they cross to humans — few scientists have ventured into the forest.
That's what Wolfe hopes to change. His group is organizing a vast range of field research in Cameroon: collecting blood from hunters and their kills, testing wild and domestic birds for avian flu, conducting anthropological surveys of hunters' habits, and investigating sudden die-offs of primates in the jungle. The combined effort is a year-round operation, employing more than 30 full-time scientists, technicians, veteri narians, and IT specialists. Wolfe's group collaborates with dozens more worldwide, from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the virology lab at France's University of Montpellier.

additional evidence

times article
excerpt:

"The Chicago-based United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit seemed shocked by the injustice of her conviction. It took the extraordinary step of releasing Ms. Thompson from prison immediately after hearing arguments, without waiting to issue a ruling. One of the judges hinted that Ms. Thompson may have been railroaded. “It strikes me that your evidence is beyond thin,” Judge Diane Wood told the lawyer from Mr. Biskupic’s office."

Yeah, but I'm sure they had good reason

2007 recipient of the Nation's Ridenhour Truth-Telling Prize:

Donald Vance, a 29-year-old Navy veteran, had been a long-time supporter of the war in Iraq. But that changed last April when, serving as a security contractor in Baghdad, he was detained by U.S. forces and held without charges for more than three months at Camp Cropper, one of Iraq’s most notorious military prison camps. There, Vance and a colleague, Nathan Ertel, were denied counsel and were largely prevented from communicating with the outside world. They were held in isolation in extremely cold cells without adequate clothing or blankets. Vance was also subjected to sleep deprivation, interrogation for hours and periodically denied food and water for long periods. The U.S. military eventually released both Vance and Ertel without explanation, admitting that they had done nothing wrong.

Vance secretly kept notes on his time at Camp Cropper and smuggled them out in a Bible. He took his story public in December, offering a detailed and verifiable account of his experiences to the New York Times. His report has provided a rare and credible inside account of the Pentagon’s detention operations — and is one of only a few stories to emerge since the abuse scandals at Abu Ghraib. Vance has also filed a lawsuit in federal court, charging former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the government with torture and violating Vance’s rights of habeas corpus.

Ironically, Vance was arrested in a military sweep that he helped to instigate. An employee of Shield Group Security at the time of his arrest, Vance had been working as an unpaid informant for the F.B.I., sending reports about suspicious activities at the Iraqi security firm where he worked, including possible illegal weapons trading. When American soldiers raided the company, Vance and Ertel were arrested and detained with the others. For reasons that are still unclear, the military failed to believe or act on Vance’s story, holding him even after the F.B.I. confirmed Vance’s activities were legal and that he had been acting in the interests of the U.S. government.

Vance, a resident of Chicago, joined the U.S. Navy after graduating high school. He started doing security work in Iraq after the fall of Baghdad. He is working on a book about his experiences in Iraq.

Gmail April Fool's

i had a full blog prepared lambasting's Google's new Gmail Paper service until i realized that today is April 1st. you got me, Google. you got me.

New! Introducing Gmail Paper

Everyone loves Gmail. But not everyone loves email, or the digital era. What ever happened to stamps, filing cabinets, and the mailman? Well, you asked for it, and it’s here. We’re bringing it back.

A New Button
Now in Gmail, you can request a physical copy of any message with the click of a button, and we'll send it to you in the mail.

Simplicity Squared
Google will print all messages instantly and prepare them for delivery. Allow 2-4 business days for a parcel to arrive via post.

Total Control
A stack of Gmail Paper arrives in a box at your doorstep, and it’s yours to keep forever. You can read it, sort it, search it, touch it. Or even move it to the trash—the real trash. (Recycling is encouraged.)

Keep it Secret, Keep it Safe
Google takes privacy very seriously. But once your email is physically in your hands, it's as secure as you want to make it.
