israeli aggression
from the BBC:
Palestinian medical sources say the number of people killed in Gaza now stands at more thancan this be considered a measured response by the israeli military? can israel stop the rocket attacks by invading gaza and initiating an ever-escalating level of conflict? does israel have the right to overthrow a democratically-elected hamas government? the answer to all these questions is NO. if israelis were living in fear of rocket fire, gaza residents, and not just hamas-supporters, are now living in fear of missile attacks, collateral gunfire, mortar rounds, shrapnel, building collapse, lack of electricity and medical aid, and starvation, as the UN is now reporting an acute lack of food in gaza. Sphere: Related Content5001200, with some2,5004300 wounded. These figures cannot be independently verified.FiveThirteen Israelis have been killed since the start of Israel's military operation, which is now in its 10th day.

So Israel has killed 100 times as many Palestinians. Thus the liberal NYTimes in yesterday's online edition continued with its "balanced" coverage of the conflict--2 of the Times' 6 front-page photos showed results of Hamas rocket fire, while one photo was basically neutral, showing merely an Israeli soldier standing around. Balanced coverage of an unbalanced conflict.
Today's NYTimes slideshow--out of 9 photos, I'd say 1 is neutral, 5 show results of Israeli attacks (some with insulting qualifiers), and 3 show results of Hamas attacks.

778 dead, 200 of whom were children. Meanwhile:
"As the United Nations and the Red Cross condemned the Israeli assault on Gaza, the US Senate approved a measure overwhelmingly supporting the attack. The non-binding measure passed by unanimous voice vote. Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell both spoke in favor of the Israeli invasion. Reid said, 'When we pass this resolution, the United States Senate will strengthen our historic bond with the state of Israel, by reaffirming Israel’s inalienable right to defend against attacks from Gaza, as well as our support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.' The House is expected to pass a similar measure today."
As for a similar House resolution--
221 Democrats voted to support Israel. 4 voted no. 22 voted present. 9 did not vote.
168 Republicans voted yes. 1 voted no. 8 did not vote.
1 independent voted yes.

New Chomsky articles on Gaza: "[The Israelis timed the assault] shortly before noon, when children were returning from school and crowds were milling in the streets of densely populated Gaza City. It took only a few minutes to kill over 225 people and wound 700, an auspicious opening to the mass slaughter of defenseless civilians trapped in a tiny cage with nowhere to flee."

Dave "Noodles" McConnell and I went to the Palestinian Cultural Center here in Allston last night for a discussion on the cease-fire. We're going back tonight. Chomsky is supposed to be speaking.
Update: came within arm's length of Chomsky. He was wearing a serious wool sweater, green.
A summary of what he said
tonight regarding Israel's supposed "right" (much-touted by U.S. Congress and U.S. media) to defend itself with force: "We all agree with the principle that a state has the right to defend itself. But that doesn't mean a state always has the right to defend itself with *force.* Take for instance the American Revolution. No one asks if the British military had the right to defend itself with force from the colonist army.... If the British wanted to defend itself it had the right to do so and could have done so--it could have gotten out of there and gone home." I quote very loosely.
